Cllr Christine Carrigan has been elected unopposed as the new Leader of the Labour Group on Stockport Council, following the group’s Annual General Meeting held on Monday.

Cllr Carrigan brings over two decades of leadership experience from across different sectors. She previously served as Deputy Leader of the Labour Group for two years and has built a strong reputation for principled, people-focused politics.

“I’m incredibly honoured to have been chosen to lead our group,” said Cllr Carrigan. “Stockport is facing serious challenges—on housing, social care, and basic services. But I believe in the power of our team, and I believe that by working together, we can hold this administration to account and push for the long-term solutions that Stockport deserves.”

Cllr Carrigan has pledged to lead with openness, integrity, and collaboration, setting out a clear agenda for the Labour Group. Under her leadership, the group will prioritise expanding affordable housing, protecting vital local services, and strengthening relationships with residents, council officers, and partner organisations across Greater Manchester and beyond.

The Annual General Meeting also saw Cllr Joe Barratt, who represents Bredbury and Woodley, elected to succeed Cllr Carrigan as Deputy Leader. Cllr Barratt currently serves as Chair of the Communities and Transport Committee.

“It’s an honour to step into this role at such an important time for our borough,” said Cllr Barratt. “I’m fully committed to supporting Cllr Carrigan in her new role as Leader of Stockport Labour Group, having previously been a very effective Deputy Leader, and working with my colleagues to deliver real improvements for Stockport.”
