Stockport Labour Group is proud to welcome the opening of Stockroom on Saturday 24 May, a major new library, events space and community hub right in the heart of our town centre.

This landmark project was first proposed and championed by the Labour administration in 2021. From securing £14.5 million through the Future High Streets Fund to shaping the vision itself, we led the way in bringing Stockroom to life, reimagining Merseyway with a modern, inclusive space designed for the benefit of all Stockport residents.

Stockroom brings together book lending, historic archives, a café run by Mercado, a performance space, children’s areas, exhibitions and more. It’s a space for learning, creativity and community, and we’re confident it will help bring new energy into the town centre.

This project reflects our group’s values – creating opportunity, improving access to culture, and investing in spaces that serve everyone, regardless of age, background or ability. With accessible facilities and something for everyone, Stockroom sets a new standard for what a town centre can offer.

Cllr Christine Carrigan, Leader of the Labour Group, said:

“Stockroom shows what’s possible when we back bold ideas with real investment. This was always about more than just a new library, it’s about giving residents a space to come together, learn, and enjoy the best of what Stockport has to offer. We’re proud of the role Stockport Labour played in making it happen.”

Cllr Joe Barratt, Deputy Leader of the Labour Group, said:

“Stockroom represents everything we believe in as a group – ambition for our town, investment in people, and a commitment to making Stockport a place where culture, creativity and community thrive. It’s a space built not just for today, but for future generations, and I’m really excited to see it open its doors.”
