Stockport Labour is pleased to welcome the extension of the Household Support Fund, a critical lifeline for vulnerable households facing financial hardship. The extension will provide an additional six months of support, ensuring that this essential fund continues through to at least April 2025.
Cllr Christine Carrigan, Deputy Leader of Stockport Labour Group, expressed her support for the extension, stating, “I am really pleased that the Labour government has committed to extending the Household Support Fund to at least April of next year. This is vital support during the cost-of-living crisis that many households across Stockport urgently need. Our mission is to ensure that those who require the most assistance can access it, and we now turn to the Liberal Democrat Administration, urging them to ensure this support is delivered equitably across the borough to our most vulnerable residents.”
This extension is a welcome move as it prevents a potential cliff edge of support for the most vulnerable residents in Stockport. It reflects a broader commitment by the Labour government to address the urgent needs of those affected by the cost-of-living crisis while continuing to work towards long-term economic stability and growth.
Cllr Carrigan added, “The Labour group will continue to work closely with the Labour Government to build on this progress and ensure that local government funding remains a priority in policymaking. After 14 years of sticking plaster politics, it’s time for a change. We need sensible, adequate, and long-term financial settlements for local governments to become the new normal. This announcement today marks the very beginning of that shift.”
